A MINIATURE BY 'L. SCHUNG', AFTER CASPAR NETSCHER, FROM THE COLLECTION OF COUNTESS TASCHA PAHLEN - A miniature painting on bone showing Madame de Montespan, lover of King Louis XIV, in a nicely embroidered dress sitting at a table with a garden in the background. Taped on the reverse is the document stating the provenance and signed ”L Schung, Dresden.” Provenance: From the former collection of Countess Tascha Pahlen. ”The Pahlen family are listed under the ”New Russian Counts” as of Feb. 2, 1799. the new counts were created by Emperor Paul and his successors. The name is also listed as Von der Pahlen who was a military governor in 1801 who was rumored to be Catherine the Great's last lover. With Catherine's death, Paul inherited the throne. Though he ruled for only 5 years, general discontent for Paul's policies led to his assassination on March 11, 1801 in the castle of St. Michael in St. Petersburg. The conspiracy was headed by military governor Count von der Pahlen, though it seems like Tsesarevitch Alexander was involved as well.” Please make all inquiries before bidding.
