A GERMAN 17TH CENTURY CARVED-WOOD FIGURE OF ST. SEBASTIAN - A nicely carved and painted wooden figure of the Christian martyr St. Sebastian, patron saint of soldiers, archers, plague victims, and the disabled, among other things. According to tradition he was killed during Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians, having first been tied to a tree and shot with arrows he was then healed by Saint Irene before promptly making his way to Diocletian to inform him of his sins. Unfortunately for Sebastian Diocletian ordered his men to club the Saint to death, and so he was martyred for good. Holy Roman Empire, 17th Century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
