A HAND-COLORED BRITISH ENGRAVING OF 'THE BATTLE OF THE NILE', C. 1799 - A brilliantly hand-colored engraving depicting the fateful climax of the Battle of the Nile (Bataille d'Aboukir en Français), when the French Flagship 'L'Orient' exploded after an hours long battle with the British Navy. The defeat and death of Vice-Admiral Brueys at the hands of Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson crushed Napoleon's ambitions in Egypt and launched Nelson into a national spotlight. Britain, c. 1799.
