A LARGE CENTRAL ASIAN, TURKOMAN, GILT-SILVER TUMAR AMULET HOLDER, 19/20 CC. - A large Turkoman 'tumar' a type of triangular amulet holder found amongst Turkic peoples. This example is in the characteristic style of the Teke tribe, famous for destroying the city of Merv in the middle of the 19th century. The tumar is gilt across much of its surface, with some sections left in their original silver to show intricate geometric patterns. The octagonal tube at center is designed to hold a rolled amulet scroll. The face is set with carnelians throughout and has at its bottom panels of red and green fabric. The tines at the bottom are hung with many bells. Turkmenistan, 19th or Early 20th Century. Weight: 26.5 oz. (750 g.) Dimensions: L: 11 3/8 in., (28.9 cm.) Please make all inquiries before bidding.
