Bidspirit auction | A VIENNA BRONZE AND MARBLE
A VIENNA BRONZE AND MARBLE EROTIC VIDE POCHE, CA 1900 - This Franz Xavier Bergmann exquisite vide poche (valet tray) is a fine example of the erotic Art Nouveau style of the period. The statuette is of a patinated and cold-painted Viennese bronze depicting the image of a provocative oriental dancer, adorned in fine jewelry, wearing an elaborately detailed dress, and atop a patterned and multi-colored rug. The rug lies crumpled over a burgundy-veined marble base, with one corner draping into the carved bowl, used to house keys, loose change, etc. The front of the dress is suspended on small hinges in the dancer's hands, allowing it to be raised over her head, adding to the erotic style of the piece. There are no marks/signatures on the piece, as it was common for Bergmann to remain anonymous on some erotic sculptures. Austria - Ca. 1900 Dimensions: H: 6 3/4 in., (17.1 cm.)
