AN OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING BY RAMKINKAR BAIJ, INDIAN 1906-1980 - Ramkinkar Baij was one of the pioneers of Modern Indian art and a key figure of contextual modernism. In 1925 on the advice of Ramananda Chatterjee, he joined Kala Bhavan at Shantiniketan. At Shantiniketan under the guidance of Nandalal Bose and encouraged by its liberating intellectual environment shaped by Rabindranath Tagore his artistic skills acquired new depths and complexity. After finishing his studies at Shantiniketan he joined as a faculty and along with Binod Bihari and Nandalal Bose played a significant role in making Shantiniketan the most important centre for modern art. Shantiniketan was conceived as a focal point of artistic experimentation and resurgence of art. Ramkinkar Baij was invited to participate in the Salon des Realities Noivelles in 1950 and the Salon de Mai in 1951. In 1970 he was awarded Padma Bhushan by the government of India. In 1976 he was made a fellow of the Lalit Kala Academy. In 1979 an honorary D.Litt was awarded by the Rabindranath Bharati University. His paintings are highly sought after and sold by most well-known auctioneers around the world along with great Indian masters like Maqbool Fida Husain, Ramkumar, Jehangir Sabavala, B Prabha, Manjit Bawa, Jamini Roy, and many more.
