A HAND-COLORED ENGRAVING OF A CHINESE IMPERIAL MESSENGER, BRITISH, 1797 - A finely made hand-colored engraving captioned 'A Quan or Mandarin bearing a letter from the Emperor of China'. This engraving comes from the important work 'An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China' published in 1797 by William Bulmer & Co. for George Nicol, the official bookseller to King George III. The work details the famous Macartney Embassy, the very first British diplomatic mission to the Qianlong Emperor in China. The United Kingdom, 1797. Dimensions: 16 3/4 x 20 1/8 in., (42.5 x 51.1 cm.)
