A JAMINI ROY (INDIAN 1887-1972) TEMPERA ON CANVAS PAINTING - Jamini Roy was one of the most important Indian artists of International fame. He was one of the most famous students of Abanindranath Tagore. His simplified minimalistic flattened-out style and reminiscent of European modern art was influenced by the Bazar Kalighat folk paintings sold outside the famous Kalighat temple in Calcutta. Roy began his career as a commissioned portrait painter. During 1920 he gave up commissioned portrait paintings in an effort to discover his own style. He changed style from his academic western training and featured a new style based on Bengali folk traditions. He used oil, tempera, and mineral pigments to paint. In 1946 his work was exhibited in London and in 1953 New York. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1954 by the Government of India. His work has been exhibited extensively in International exhibitions and can be found in many private and public collections like the Victoria and Albert Museum London. He called himself Patua and produced paintings in large quantities to sell to the middle-class population of India at affordable prices. His paintings are highly sought after and sold by major galleries and auctioneers around the world alongside paintings by great Indian masters like Hemendranath Mazumdar, Binod Bihari, Maqbool Fida Husain, Jehangir Sabavala, Tyeb Mehta, Ramkumar, Manjit Bawa, B.
