AN INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTING, PAHARI SCHOOL, GODDESS DURGA ON A LION, DEVI SERIES - This Pahari painting depicts a scene from the devotional text Devi Mahatmya. Pahari paintings were made by the artists of Himalayan mountain kingdoms. Here Devi Durga is riding on the lion to kill the demon Mahisasur. This is Goddess Durga’s war on evil. Devi means Goddess in Sanskrit. Durga is the mother goddess in the Hindu pantheon. She is depicted as having multiple arms allowing her to protect all from every direction. Here Durga is in her full battle mode, arms swirling, hands clasping and an array of weapons and demons falling to bloody death. Yoginis and Bhairavas help her in her battle.
