A SET OF FOUR 18TH C. ETCHINGS, ANTIQUITIES OF HERCULANEUM, CARLO NOLLI (1724-1770) AND GIOVANNI MORGHEN (1721-1789) - Pages from the print suite 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' ('Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposte'): Pages 325 and 321 by Giovanni Elia Morghen (1717-1789) and pages 287 and 329 by Carlo Nolli (1724-1770). All pages are prints of etchings depicting Ancient Roman statues from the Bourbon excavations in the Gulf of Naples. 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' was an eight-volume collection of engravings taken during the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum published between 1757 and 1792 by the Regia Stamperia. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was buried under volcanic ash and pumice preserving its buildings and artworks. The collection was actualized by 25 prominent artists and, despite the name, contains pieces from all excavations by the Bourbons in the Gulf of Naples including Pompeii, Stabia, and two sites at Herculaneum: Resina and Portici.
