AN 18TH C. ETCHING, ANTIQUITIES OF HERCULANEUM, MYTHOLOGICAL ANIMALS, FERDINANDO CAMPANA (1750-1790) - A double-sided page from the print suite 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' ('Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposte'). The etching on the back is by Ferdinando Campana (1750-1790) and depicts a Roman fresco with Mythological animals. The title of the front page, 'Tavola IV', translates to Table 4, possibly denoting this page as an appendix or form of an index. 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' was an eight-volume collection of engravings taken during the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum published between 1757 and 1792 by the Regia Stamperia. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was buried under volcanic ash and pumice preserving its buildings and artworks. The collection was actualized by 25 prominent artists and, despite the name, contains pieces from all excavations by the Bourbons in the Gulf of Naples including Pompeii, Stabia, and two sites at Herculaneum: Resina and Portici.
