AN 18TH C. ETCHING, ANTIQUITIES OF HERCULANEUM, THE FURY OF ACHILLES, GIUSEPPE ALOJA (1783-1837) - Page 251 titled 'The Fury of Achilles' from the print suite 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' ('Le Antichita di Ercolano Esposte') by Giuseppe Aloja (1783-1837) from the Bourbon excavations in the Gulf of Naples. It depicts scenes of the Greek hero Achilles and the goddess Minerva repressing his fury. 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Exposed' was an eight-volume collection of engravings taken during the excavation of the ruins of Herculaneum published between 1757 and 1792 by the Regia Stamperia. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman city destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was buried under volcanic ash and pumice preserving its buildings and artworks. The collection was actualized by 25 prominent artists and, despite the name, contains pieces from all excavations by the Bourbons in the Gulf of Naples including Pompeii, Stabia, and two sites at Herculaneum: Resina and Portici.
