A 1493 GROUP OF 4 WOODCUT ENGRAVINGS, KINGS OF EUROPE, NUREMBERG CHRONICLE, CLIPPED - Four clipped pages from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. Two of these pages contain two portraits, one on each side, bringing the total of engravings up to 6 across the 4 pages. The first engraving is of the young Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire, one of the greatest Habsburg rulers. He did not officially gain the title until the beginning of the 16th century but had already been elected King of the Romans and King of the Germans and had been running a double government with his father until the year of his death in 1493, the same year of this book's publishing, in which time he became the de facto ruler of the Empire. The second engraving shows King Alfonso V of Aragon, known as Afonso the Magnanimous. By the end of his reign he was the ruler of Aragon, Sicily, and Naples. The third engraving shows King George of Bohemia, a leader of the reformist Hussites, though tolerant of the Catholic faith during his time as King of Bohemia. He is often considered the last Czech national monarch today. The fourth engraving is of a King Louis of France, though it is not clear which Louis it is referring to. The fifth engraving is of a King Ferdinand, probably Ferdinand II of Aragon, though it is not certain which Ferdinand it refers to. The sixth and final engraving is of Borso d'Este, the first Duke of Ferrara, his family having been Marquesses of Ferrara since 1039. Nuremberg, Germany, 1493.
