A C. 1493 NUREMBURG CHRONICLE WOODCUT PRINT, FRANCESCO SFORZA, BIOGRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATION, CLIPPED - A clipping from a page from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. The clipping shows an illustration of Francesco Sforza, the famed Condottiero and Fourth Duke of Milan, first of the Sforza dynasty and ally of Cosimo de' Medici. He is shown in a suit of armor and a many-plumed hat, with a spear in one hand and a condottieri mace in the other. The text of this clipping gives a brief biography of the warrior Duke as well as some commentary on his character. Nuremburg, Germany, 1493. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
