A C. 1493 NUREMBURG CHRONICLE WOODCUT PRINT, RENAISSANCE BIOGRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATION, EMPEROR FREDERICK III - Page CCXLVII (247) from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. The numbering of this page was misprinted, and bears and old attempt to white out one accidental 'X'. This page shows an illustration of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, the penultimate Emperor to be crowned by the pope and the last to be crowned in Rome. He was the very first of the Habsburg Emperors, marking the accession of what would become the most powerful and famous family in European history. He is depicted in coronation robes and an Imperial crown and is holding the orb and scepter of the Emperor. The text of this page primarily constitutes a biography of this important man, as well as commentary on his character and his lands, and some elements of the history of his reign.
