1493 SALVATOR MUNDI CHRIST AND THE APOSTLES, TETRAMORPH, NUREMBERG CHRONICLE, FULL PAGE - A full-page illustration from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. This page depicts Christ as Salvator Mundi surrounded by his 12 apostles, Matthias and Matthew both looking at Judas with expressions of suspicion. The 4 corners of the piece show the 4 cherubim of the Tetramorph, the 'living creatures' of the book of Ezekiel, here representing the 4 authors of the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The use of the Tetramorph to represent the Gospel writers was common throughout much of the middle age but was waning by the time of this book's publishing. Nuremberg, Germany, 1493.
