1493 WOODCUT VIEW OF AN ENGLISH CITY, KING DAVID, KING SOLOMON, NUREMBERG CHRONICLE, FULL PAGE - A full page from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. This page, labeled 'Anglie Provincia' depicts an anonymous walled city in the Kingdom of England set alongside a river and surrounding a large cliff. The text beneath the image discusses the history of the British Isles, referring to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England all, and mentions giants having lived on Albion in antiquity. The verso discusses the Kings David and Solomon, displaying their full-body portrayals along a vine with the label 'Linea Christi', meaning the Genealogical Line of Christ.
