A C. 1509 WOODCUT PRINT, THE SIEGE OF PADUA, HANS BURGKMAIR, GERMAN - Hans Burgkmair the Elder (German, 1473 - 1531), a woodcut print on paper depicting the Siege of Padua which occurred in 1509 when the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I attempted to retake Padua from the Republic of Venice. After bombarding the city for two weeks he sent a contingent of 7,500 landsknecht mercenaries to assault the walls, as depicted in this woodcut. Hans Burgkmair the Elder was a German painter and woodcut printmaker. In 1488 he became a pupil of Martin Schongauer in Colmar, and from 1491 he worked in Augsburg, where he earned a reputation as a master and opened his own workshop in 1498. He was an important innovator of the chiaroscuro woodcut and seems to have been the first to use a tone block. He was also a successful painter, mainly of religious scene and portraits of Augsburg citizens and members of the Holy Roman Emperor's court.
