A 1707 ENGRAVING OF BADMINTON HOUSE, JAN KIP (1652-1722) AND LEONARD KNYFF (1650-1722), BRITANNIA ILLUSTRATA - A fine engraving of the stately home known as Badminton House created by the Dutch artists Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff for their famous 1707-1709 work 'Britannia Illustrata', an important collection of unusually detailed views of English country estates. The caption reads 'Badminton in the County of Gloucester one of the Seats of the Most Noble & Potent Prince Henry Duke of Beaufort Marquesse and Earle of Worcester Baron Herbert of Chepstow Raglan & Gower, and Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.' The coat of arms of said Henry is at the center of the caption. Kip and Knyff were both accomplished artists in the Netherlands who followed William of Orange to Britain upon his ascension to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. This work appears to have been started during William's reign, considering the reference to Duke Henry who passed in 1700, but was not published until the reign of his successor Queen Anne, the first monarch of the United Kingdom.
