1685 NINE CASES OF CONSCIENCE, ROBERT SANDERSON, LORD BISHOP OF LINCOLN, ENGLAND, THEOLOGY - 'Nine Cases of Conscience: Occasionally Determined by the Late Reverend Father in God, Robert Sanderson, Lord Bishop of Lincoln'. An important theological and philosophical work collected from the writings of the aforementioned Bishop Sanderson. Sanderson discusses multiple subjects that might trouble one's conscience in 17th century England, such as marrying a recusant (a Catholic), living a soldier's life, and making rash vows, among many other broad and varied topics. Aside from Sanderson's philosophical works he is widely known for his logical works, inspiring even such famed scientists as Sir Isaac Newton, and garnering comparison to Aristotle. The frontispiece bears a detailed full-page engraving of King Charles II complete with the royal heraldry, and has an old signature from one Lois Singleton to the verso, as well as another old signature by a different hand, though we could not understand the handwriting.
