1690 LES PHILOSOPHES A L'ENCAN, DIALOGUES, LUCIAN OF SAMOSATA, LAURENT BORDELON, PHILOSOPHY, SATIRE, PARIS - 'Les Philosophes a L'Encan' or 'Philosophies for Sale' by Lucian of Samosata is a 2nd century AD satire in which representatives of the major philosophies are put up for sale at an auction attended by the Greco-Roman Gods Jupiter and Mercury. Each philosopher comes up to the block and is questioned by the prospective buyers, the responses shining light onto idiosyncrasies and inconsistencies in the various philosophies, often in a comedic fashion. This edition comes complete with commentary from the prolific 17th century French author Laurent Bordelon, an abbot, playwright, and doctor in theology among other things. Throughout the book can be found his 'remarques' in relation to the content discussed. The bookplate of Jean-Nicolas-Germain Barré can be found affixed to the front pastedown beneath an old inscription mentioned Bordelon. Before the Revolution, Barré was the last priest of the church of Saint-Eloi, in Rouen, before becoming a bookseller at the port of Rouen to escape the dangers of that time. He died as a priest serving the parish of Montville, Seine-Maritime on April 1, 1836. This French translation was published in Paris by Jean Musier in 1690.
