- Anthony Benezet (1713-1784) was one of the first American abolitionists.
In Philadelphia he succeeded in convincing the Quakers that slavery was incompatible with the Christian faith.
He wanted to ban slavery not only in the British Isles, but also in the colonies, which later became the United States.
His publications attracted worldwide attention, not least because he was the first to report in unsparing detail on the brutality of transport, etc. (see section V: "Violantly carry off some Negroes").
He was also the founder of the first girls' school on the American continent and the Negro School in Philadelphia.
