Bidspirit auction | AN ART DECO MEDIUM SIZE
AN ART DECO MEDIUM SIZE SCULPTURE OF A MALE BOXER BY HEINZ WARNEKE, SIGNED - An Art Deco medium-sized sculpture of a male boxer by German American artist Heinz Warneke (1895-1983). Signed at the base as H. WARNEKE. An interesting piece with carefully crafted details that add narrative relief to an otherwise classic and simple motif. The athlete is represented naked and in a gesture to capture a great sense of movement. The small muscles on the upper back and the frontal torso areas help to recreate the dynamic movement. To a contemporary observer, the single detail that allows us to identify the model as a boxer is the wrapped hands. However, a tone with the smart approach by Warneke, the model is not representing a 20th-century sportsman but more likely an ancient Greek fighter who has wrapped his hands with oil softened oxhide leather strips called himantes. These historical references play well with Art Deco pieces like the current one. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C.
