AN 18TH CEN. RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN IN A GILT SILVER OKLAD - The icon is hand-painted in egg tempera and gesso on a wood panel. Saint Anne is shown lying on a bed, Saint Joachim is beside her. Two midwives are depicted near them, giving the infant Mary a bath. The icon is overlaid with the finely detailed chased and repousse gilt silver oklad. Hallmarks: struck with unidentified maker's mark H.M, MPH, assay mark of St Petersburg, 1793.
