RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF JOHN THE BAPTIST - The icon depicts Saint John the Baptist, a Judaean preacher active in the area of the Jordan River in the early 1st century AD, with the Christ Child in a chalice as the Lamb of God. Hand-painted in tempera on a gessoed wood panel. John the Baptist is also known as Saint John the Forerunner in Eastern Orthodoxy. Circa the late 19th century.
