Bidspirit auction | A 19TH C. FRENCH BRONZE
A 19TH C. FRENCH BRONZE AND MARBLE DOLPHIN FIGURE, POCKET WATCH HOLDER - A late 19th-century French cast bronze and marble pocket watch stand holder in the shape of a dolphin. The piece has profuse and delicate ornamental patterns on its base. Mounted in a round dark green marble. Artists in ancient Greece and Rome depicted dolphins as distorted, more fish-like creatures, and this representation was carried over by future artisans well into the 20th century, especially in Heraldry contexts. The meaning of this animal as represented in this particular item gained more weight considering it is also a direct French royal symbol as the Dauphin of France. Dimensions: H: 8 3.4 in., (22.5 cm.) Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold ”as-is”, refer to our T&C. Helios Auctions does not ship in-house. A list of recommended shippers will be provided. Condition: Very good. The marble base has a chip on its edge. Nice toned patina.
