Bidspirit auction | A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER OKLAD ICON

A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER OKLAD ICON OF THE MADONNA OF THE SIGN BY OVCHINNIKOV - The Icon of the Mother of God ”The Sign” (Znamenie), with Saints Catherine and Paraskeva. This traditional Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Mother of God ”Znamenie” also known as Our Lady of the Sign. She is shown in the orans (prayer) position, with both hands raised in supplication. In her chest is a medallion containing the image of Christ Emmanuel, symbolizing the Incarnation - God becoming man through the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is presented frontally, with a solemn and compassionate expression. In the mandorla (medallion) at her chest is the Christ Child, blessing with one hand and holding a scroll in the other - a symbol of divine wisdom. The background is painted in a distinctive greenish-blue, common in late 19th-century Russian iconography. On either side: Left: Saint Catherine the Great Martyr, identified by her name inscription and royal garments. Right: Saint Paraskeva of Iconium, known as Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, a popular female saint in Russian Orthodoxy. The style reflects the academic and Old Believer workshop traditions, characterized by clean lines, symmetrical composition, and a luminous color palette.
