A RUSSIAN ORTHODOX SILVER OKLAD ST. NICHOLAS ICON, 19TH CEN. - A Russian Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (St. Nicholas of Myra), a highly venerated saint in Eastern Orthodoxy. Enamel and cloisonne enamel silver riza (оклад). The ornate cover is richly decorated with silver and cloisonné enamel, which is typical of high-quality Russian icons from the 19th to early 20th centuries. The saint’s right hand is raised in the traditional Orthodox blessing gesture. In his left hand, he holds a book, likely the Gospels, adorned with an ornamental cross pattern. Flanking figures in clouds are often represent Christ (to the left) and the Theotokos (Mother of God, to the right), frequently depicted in icons of St. Nicholas presenting him with the Gospel and omophorion, referencing the miracle of his ordination.
