A SILVER MOUNTED OTTOMAN TURKISH JAMBIYA WITH GOLD INLAY, LATE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CEN. - An Ottoman jambiya with a blade decorated with Koftgari Inlay with elegant Arabic calligraphy, commonly Quranic verses, maker’s names, or poetic inscriptions. The Arabic inscription reads as follows: ”O God, O Muhammad” often a protective invocation and ”The work of [maker’s name]”. The use of elongated floral panels with symmetrical arabesque decoration is very typical of late Ottoman ceremonial arms. The hilt of characteristic form is fully clad in repoussé silver, with fine foliate motifs is also a known style in 19th-century Turkish jambiyas, especially those made in Anatolia or for export to the Islamic world. The scabbard’s detailed silver floral repoussé work with loose suspension rings is also typical of Ottoman and Balkan daggers. Ottoman Empire, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
