A FIJIAN BARBED SPEAR, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Wooden barbed spear, Fiji. Dark wood with soft shining patina, uncompleted barbed spear from Fiji, called 'gadre gadre' (or 'bibi ni co' according to Fergus Clunie). Long shaft with at its top a first series of three conical barbels, points to the bottom, their height reducing from down to up. Then, a long pyramid carved with wooden teeth, like a saw. Following a second series of five conical barbels, pointed to the bottom, their height reducing from down to up. At last, a conical point ends the spear.
Estimated age: late XIX to early XX century.
