A GERMAN SPORTING STONEBOW / CROSSBOW (SCHNEPPER), EARLY 17TH CENTURY - A German crossbow or arbalest. The wooden stock with a curved butt resembles the form of early firearms, and there's a bone inlay indicating a higher-end or aristocratic piece. These types of crossbows were most commonly made during the late 16th to early 17th century, particularly in Germany, Austria, or Northern Italy, where gun-craftsmanship was advanced and ornate designs were common. The metal spoon towards the trigger group is actually a handle for a self-contained lever mechanism which allows one to pull back the bowstring using mechanical advantage. The top of this lever is stamped with a maker's mark of a bird below the letters 'HSB'. Germany, early 17th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
