A CUT-CRYSTAL LIDDED CHEST, FRANCE, LATE 19TH CENTURY - A cut crystal and gilt-bronze casket, commonly referred to as a French crystal jewelry box or Baccarat-style crystal casket, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Deeply cut crystal panels with a geometric lattice (checkerboard) pattern, mounted in gilded bronze (ormolu) with finely chased gilt bronze bands around the opening, with a central lock escutcheon and four ornate paw feet. Style: Napoleon III (Second Empire or Belle Époque), France. Very likely, Baccarat or Saint-Louis, both prestigious French glassmakers known for such work. These boxes were used to store jewelry, cosmetics, or letters, typically placed on a lady’s dressing table or bureau.
