A SIGNED P. J. MÊNE (1810-1879) FRENCH BRONZE GROUPING, HUNTING DOGS, 19TH CENTURY - A Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) signed bronze grouping of two hunting dogs sniffing out a grouse hidden in the tall grass. The piece is signed to the base and kept atop a short bronze plinth of an oval shape. Pierre-Jules Mêne was a French sculptor and Animalier considered to be among the foremost pioneers of animal sculpture in the nineteenth century. He was born into a family of Parisian metal turners, working for his father through his teenage years which granted him early access to materials and techniques for sculpting. His work was first shown in London in 1849 by famed art dealer Ernest Gambart and quickly skyrocketed in popularity due to the quality and beauty of his work. France, 19th century.
