Newman, a notable American sculptor, depicts a standing female figure draped in a contemplative or sorrowful posture, head slightly bowed and arm raised over the head classical influence with an emotional tone. Signature: ALLEN G. NEWMAN A.N.A. SCULPT. Dedication: To JOHN T. ROWLAND JR., a commissioned cast, possibly a gift or commemorative piece. Allen George Newman (1875–1940) is renowned for his heroic and allegorical bronze sculptures, especially monuments and commemorative figures in the early 20th century. Member of the National Academy of Design (noted as A.N.A. in the inscription). His most famous work is ”The Hiker” (Spanish–American War memorial), cast in numerous cities across the U.S. Provenance: The Collection of William Cervera (5/31/51 - 3/15/22).
