A JULIEN LE ROY (1686-1759) SILVER POCKETWATCH W/ KEY, 18TH CEN. - A pocket watch is by Julien Le Roy à Paris, a name that signifies one of the most respected horological dynasties in French watchmaking history. Julien Le Roy (1686–1759) was a royal horologist to Louis XV and a leading innovator in precision horology. The inscription ”Julien Le Roi à Paris” on the dial and movement suggests this watch was either made by or in tribute to his lineage, possibly by his descendants or workshop successors. Given the late 18th- to early 19th-century style of this watch (especially the verge escapement and decorative pierced balance cock), it is most likely posthumous, possibly dating to 1770–1800. Movement & Design Features: Escapement: Verge fusee, typical of the 18th century. Balance cock: Finely pierced and engraved, with a floral motif. Small subsidiary dial: Showing Regulateur avancé/retardé for fine adjustment. Signature: Visible both on dial and movement, engraved in script. Case: The case appears to be silver or coin silver (the metal has not been tested) with a two-part structure (dust cover and outer back), and the movement is surrounded by a gilt or brass plate.
