A PAIR OF LIDDED CHINESE CRACKLEWARE VASES, 19TH CEN. - A pair of Chinese porcelain vases with lids, of a baluster form, with crackle glaze, painted in underglaze blue with dragons flanking among flowers between incised bronzed bands. These pieces resemble Chinese export porcelain with a strong Japanese Satsuma or Kyoto ware influence, especially visible in the fine craquelure (crackled glaze). Each vase features blue-and-white floral designs with mythical dragons, typical of Qing dynasty decorative themes. Bronzed fittings around the neck and base are relatively unusual and suggest either late Qing export ware or a Japanese Meiji-period hybrid design. Markings: each vase bears an incised mark, say Chenghua Nian Zhi, meaning ”Made during the Ming dynasty Chenghua period (1465-1487)”, but the mark is likely apocryphal, a common practice in later pieces to honor earlier dynasties.
