1792 LETTRES DE MIRABEAU 1ST EDITION, 3 VOLS., FRENCH REVOLUTION LEADER, EROTIC LOVE LETTERS - A 1792 first edition of the 'Lettres de Mirabeau' by the famed French Revolutionary leader Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791). Mirabeau was an ardent critic of the Bourbon government, in addition to being a rabble-rouser, a drunk, and a playboy. A combination of these factors caused him to find himself imprisoned, eventually in the Chateau de Joux, where he was granted leave to visit a town. There he met his mistress, Marie Thérèse de Monnier, also known simply as Sophie, to whom he wrote his erotic love letters after being imprisoned again in Vincennes, where he met the Marquis de Sade, though they hated each other. Years later he was release from prison, this time finding himself elected to represent the Third Estate at the Estates-General. He was instrumental in many major moments of the French Revolution and did a great deal to hold the fledgling republic together. This leather-bound and brightly gilt 1792 first edition was collected by Pierre Manuel and published by J. B. Garnery in Paris. These are the first 3 volumes of a 4 volume set.
