A JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD MIXED METAL AND GOLD DAMASCENED (SHIPPŌ-ZŌGAN) BOX - A Japanese Meiji period mixed metal and gold damascened (shippō-zōgan) box, made in Kyoto or possibly from a workshop associated with Komai. The box features a gilt bronze body with delicate fine gold and silver inlay in floral and scroll motifs, using the traditional damascene technique. Plain wood lining interior. Four spherical gilt-metal feet. The typical turquoise-blue enameled underside is often found on Komai-style boxes. The design is dense spirals, flowerhead forms, and stylized foliate medallions.
