A RUSSIAN PORCELAIN FIGURE OF NINA NIZHINSKAYA BY DANKO, 1923 - Imperial Porcelain Factory or State Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg / Petrograd, after a model by Natalia Danko, circa 1920s Modeled by Natalia Yakovlevna Danko (1892–1942), the figure depicts the famous ballerina Nina Nizhinskaya in a graceful pose with arms arched above her head, standing en pointe on a cushion-shaped base enriched with gilt details. She wears a close-fitting costume painted in black and grey with gilded honeycomb and foliate designs, her hair styled in short curls, and black slippers with gold accents. The expressive face and lively pose are characteristic of Danko’s celebrated ballerina series, which captured leading Russian dancers of the era. Marked: hammer and circle, 1923, 221/28 on the verso. Natalia Danko was one of the most prominent sculptors at the Imperial and later State Porcelain Factory, renowned for her elegant and stylized figurines, especially of dancers and theatrical figures. Nina Nizhinskaya (likely a reference to Nizhinskaya, possibly related to the famous ballet family of Nijinsky/Nijinska) would have been a celebrated subject in the Russian ballet world, fitting perfectly into Danko’s series.
