A RUSSIAN IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY CUP, ST. PETERSBURG, C. 1830 - AN IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY CUP, ST. PETERSBURG, REIGN OF NICHOLAS I (1825–1855), CIRCA 1830. A rare and finely painted porcelain cabinet cup featuring a beautifully executed half-length portrait of a young Renaissance figure with a plumed hat, white collar, and blue cloak, holding an artist’s palette and brush. The portrait is set against a dark brown ground, bordered by ornate Neo-Gothic style decoration in jewel-like enamels, deep cobalt, emerald green, and ruby red, with intricate geometric patterns highlighted in raised gilding. The elaborately scrolled handle is richly gilded with foliate detailing. The verso bears the underglaze blue crowned ”НI” monogram, a mark often misattributed to the Imperial Factory but known to have been used at the Batenin Factory in Moscow to signal imperial favor or to imitate imperial production for high-end clientele. Their work is prized today for its technical finesse and rarity, as production was more limited compared to state-supported manufactories. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
