A RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER AND CLLOISONNE ENAMEL CIGARETTE CASE, 1890 - A RUSSIAN SILVER-GILT AND CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CIGARETTE CASE, NIKOLAY ZVEREV, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1890. Of rectangular form with rounded corners, the hinged cover is decorated with scrolling foliate motifs and blossoms in vibrant polychrome cloisonné enamel, including turquoise, white, green, red, purple, and royal blue, all against a finely stippled gilded ground, the borders with turquoise enamel beading, the reverse similarly decorated. The interior is richly fire-gilded. Hallmarks: struck with 84 silver kokoshnik mark, Moscow assay; maker’s initials НЗ (NZ) for Nikolay Zverev. Nikolay Zverev was an active Moscow silversmith specializing in high-quality cloisonné enamel work during the late 19th century, producing objects in the traditional Russian Revival style. His works are closely associated with the refined enamel tradition that flourished in Moscow under masters such as Feodor Rückert and Pavel Ovchinnikov, and were often retailed by leading jewelers.
