A LARGE RUSSIAN GILT-SILVER TANKARD WITH HARMONIST, 1890 - Russian silver tankard elaborately decorated in high relief with folk scenes. The cylindrical tankard is cast and chased with a continuous relief scene of Russian peasants in traditional attire, celebrating aboard a boat, drinking and interacting as they travel across a choppy river, rendered with fluid repousse waves. The lid is domed and surmounted by a highly detailed cast finial in the form of a seated Russian peasant playing a squeezebox. The handle is architecturally inspired, angular and geometric with stacked rectangular forms, terminating in a stylized thumb-lift and applied scrolled support. The interior and the underside of the lid are richly parcel-gilt. Hallmarks: 84 Russian silver standard, maker's mark ”N.Ya.” in Cyrillic, 1890. Weight: 63.24 o., 1739 g. The repoussé and chased boat and figure scenes are crisp and well-defined, with minimal wear to detail. The figural finial of a seated man playing a concertina is intact with no bends, breaks. The hinged lid opens and closes smoothly; the hinge pin appears original and secure.
