A JAPANESE MIXED-METAL BRONZE FIGURE OF FUKUROKUJU, MEIJI PERIOD (1868–1912) - Cast standing on a naturalistic rockwork base, the figure depicts Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), revered as the deity of wisdom, longevity, and prosperity. He is shown smiling broadly, dressed in long flowing robes finely decorated with incised and gilt cloud patterns, with details in gilt and shakudō. He wears a red cap with a gilt band, his long beard falling over his chest. In his right hand he holds a double gourd (hyōtan), a traditional symbol of good fortune and health, while from its neck perches a small gilt animal, likely a deer or crane’s head, both associated with long life. His robes are further embellished with gilt highlights, and the naturalistic treatment of the hands and expressive facial features exemplify the refined workmanship of the Meiji period. Notes: figures of Fukurokuju were popular in the Meiji period both for domestic devotion and export, embodying themes of prosperity and long life. The combination of cast bronze with gilt and lacquered details is typical of the period’s mixed-metal artistry, reflecting the technical mastery of Japanese foundries.
