A BRONZE HINDU INCENSE BURNER BY MALVINA HOFFMAN, AMERICAN, 1920 - Malvina Hoffman (American, 1887-1966), Hindu Incense Burner (Serge Oukrainsky) with attached incenser, 1920. Bronze with gilt application over black patina. Signed and dated on the left side of the platform: ”Malvina Hoffman, 1920.” Further inscribed: ”Roman Bronze Works NY.” Provenance: Sotheby's, New York NY AMERICAN PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS AND SCULPTURE UNITED STATES, 12 Sep 1994. Malvina Hoffman was an American sculptor and author. She studied bronze casting, chasing, and finishing at foundries under Auguste Rodin. Hoffman became famous internationally for her sculptures of ballet dancers, such as Vaslav Nijinsky and Anna Pavlova, who often posed for her. Hoffman also created portrait busts of working-class people, and her sculpture series of culturally diverse people, entitled Hall of the Races of Mankind, was a popular permanent exhibition at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
