SERAPHIN SOUDBININE, FRENCH, 1870–1944, ANNA PAVLOVA EN BACCHANTE, 1920 - A patinated bronze by Seraphine Soudbinine (1867–1944), ”Anna Pavlova as a Bacchante”, model created circa 1913. Early edition cast on a black marble circular base. Provenance: Private collection, Paris. By descent from Pierre Pitoëff (c. 1880–1962), noted French theatrical costumer and brother of Georges Pitoëff (1884–1939), Russian-born actor and set designer. Note: This sculpture references the fourth scene from The Seasons ballet, choreographed by Marius Petipa (1818–1910) with music by Alexander Glazunov (1865–1936). The scene portrays an autumnal landscape featuring a Bacchante participating in the ”Autumn Bacchanale.” Anna Pavlova famously danced the role of the Bacchante in 1907.
