A MEIJI JAPANESE TREE-FORM GILT AND SILVERED ART NOUVEAU STYLE VASE - A MEIJI PERIOD JAPANESE MIXED-METAL TREE-FORM VASE, LATE 19TH CENTURY. A finely crafted Japanese Meiji-era bronze vase or brush pot shaped as the lower half of a tree trunk, a flower branch reaching upward and curving around the base. The flowers are variously gilt and silvered and are represented in multiple shapes. The piece is set atop a short base of stone with a curvy border shaped to match the silhouette of the roots of the tree. This type of naturalistic design, combining bronze with mixed-metal inlays, reflects the Art Nouveau sensibilities that resonated with Western collectors during the Meiji era, when Japanese metalwork was highly sought after at international expositions.
