A PERSIAN OR TRANSCAUCASIAN KINDJAL DAGGER QAMA WITH GOLD INLAY, 19TH CENTURY - A Persian or Transcaucasian kindjal dagger with a characteristically shaped bone handle and a blade of steel decoratively inlaid with gold at the forte and possessing two slender fullers that run most of the length of the blade. The inscription at the first is in Persian (using Arabic script), and though slightly stylized and partly worn, the legible portion appears to read: السلطان / السلطان Which translates to: ”Al-Sultan, ” meaning ”The Sultan” or ”The Sovereign.” Above it, the smaller line may contain: عمل / صنع. Which translates to ”Made by” or ”Work of”, commonly seen in weapons of Persian and Indo-Islamic origin. So, the full inscription likely reads something similar to: عمل السلطان ”Made by the Sultan” or ”Work of the Sultan”. This is a common stylized or honorific phrase used on Islamic arms. It does not necessarily refer to a literal sultan but may denote royal patronage, high craftsmanship, or simply a prestigious workshop. Ottoman Empire, 19th century.
