A GERMAN HUNTING DAGGER WITH AN ETCHED BLADE, 18TH CENTURY - A highly ornate German hunting hanger or hunting short sword (hirschfanger), circa 1770–1820. It is a ceremonial or presentation-grade weapon. The sword features a hilt which is made of gilded bronze with extremely detailed relief work. The knuckle bow includes a full standing figure of a man in court dress (likely representing a forester, noble, or mythological hunter). Shell guard and pommel are deeply chased with hunting scenes: stags, boars, hounds, riders a classic motif of noble leisure. The grip is a combination of tortoiseshell veneer with inset mother-of-pearl panel, indicating high prestige. The blade is straight, single-edged or slightly curved toward the tip. It is etched with hunting motifs, floral scrolls, animals, and possible monogram or maker’s mark at the forte. Long ricasso and flattened back spine, consistent with hunting blades of the late 1700s.
