A GERMAN HIRSCHFANGER DAGGER W/ETCHED BLADE AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTS, 18TH C. - German Hirschfänger, 18th century, Germany (Saxony, Prussia, or Bavaria), circa 1740–1780. The blade is straight, single-edged, with a spatulate tip (common for ceremonial use). It shows engraving of stylized stags, scrollwork, and arabesques, classic hunting themes. Etched cartouche features rearing stags and hunting foliage, set within an architectural border. The hilt and crossguard with simple quillons, finished in gilt brass or gilded bronze. The grip is polished horn in a tapered shape, fastened with gilt hunting rosettes, a typical decorative motif for the period. The collar and pommel cap are also gilded, with subtle decorative grooves. The scabbard is constructed of wood covered in black leather, visibly aged and cracking in places, fitted with three richly embossed gilt brass mounts. The top mount features a central medallion with a hunting dog and a horn. The middle and bottom mounts are adorned with large oak leaf motifs, symbolic of hunting nobility. Two loose suspension rings for frog or baldric wear. This Hirschfänger was likely carried by a nobleman or forester (Jäger) during ceremonial hunts. Condition: The blade shows light oxidation and wear, but etching remains legible. Scabbard leather is degraded but intact. Gilt mounts are in good condition, with attractive patina and no major damage.
