AN UNUSUAL RUSSIAN WOOTZ HUNTING DAGGER WITH SECRET COMPARTMENT, 19TH CEN. - An unusual Russian dagger with a wootz steel blade similar to that of an Indo-Persian Kard dagger and a hilt like that of a German Hirschfanger, comprised of stag horn and affixed with an s-shaped iron guard and mounts which have all been decorated with gold damascene. The most unusual aspect is a small hidden compartment within the pommel, closed by a hinged lid decorated similarly to the guard. The dagger is kept within a scabbard of black leather affixed with bright silver mounts with embossed foliate motifs. The scabbard has also been affixed with florally patterned fabric in pink, purple, and green colors. Kept within the silver mouth of the scabbard is a small utility knife with a dark horn handle and chased decoration. Russian Empire, 19th century. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
